Original Toronto Star caption: The Shofar Heralds year 5735; Heralding Rosh Hashanah; the Jewish New Year; which begins tonight at sunset; Harold Bliss sounds a century-old shofar-ram's horn-at Temple Sinai while Rabbi Jordan Pearson listens. The shofar was taken from Baghdad to Hong Kong by the colony's first rabbi and was used there for 100 years until it was brought to Toronto by the rabbi's grandson and given to Temple Sinai. The Jewish New Year marks the beginning of the 10 days of penitence that end with Yom Kippur; the Day of Atonement; on Sept. 26. The new year is 5735.
