Original Toronto Star caption: 'Don't burn us'. This is the agony of riot-torn Detorit; mirrored in the glass door of a Negro-owned bank where a hastily scrawled sign pleads to be spared from arson. The smaller note on the right door panel gives the advice: 'No money left here overnight.' A U.S. flag lies draped behind the door and a stepladder has been roped to the entrance in a feeble attempt to keep out looters. The bank was spared but many businesses were not. The damage toll in America's worst racial outbreak has passed the $200 million mark and may rise as high as $1 billion.
