Original Toronto Star caption: First of the crew of 31 is seen being rescued by coast guard breeches buoy as high winds and turbulent seas beat the stricken and battered collier Oakey L. Alexander off Cape Elizabeth; Maine. Ship lost its bow at the height of the gale that swept the Atlantic coast yesterday. The vessel had to be run on to the beach. Rescue crew are shown here as they use hand power rather than machine lest they part the slender lifeline to the stricken vessel.
