Original Toronto Star caption: No Mammy; Singer; this is one of the brightly colored poles that dot British Columbia. Today they are preserved as landmarks. Long ago the poles were carved by a family of B.C. Indians to honor the memory of one of their ancestors. They are located in an Indian graveyard at Alert Bay on the Pacific coast.
