Original Toronto Star caption: One of the last Metro farmers keeps the flavor. One of the last real farmers, Scarborough 72-year-old Joe Rittenhouse, has managed to preserve the rural life of 80 years ago at his homestead on Beare Rd. northeast of Metro Zoo. He has no running water in his big, old-fashioned kitchen, which is dominated by a huge wood-burning stove that would leave a collector of Canadiana drooling. He raises cattle and chickens in a pegged-beam-and-pole barn, which dates back to the last century. And he looks after all the chores himself. Rittenhouse homestead, located on Beare Road, east side, north of Finch Avenue East.(43.834502, -79.170942)
