Original Toronto Star caption: Mending, Peter Alley and son, Tom, are both recovering well from a transplant operation at Toronto Western Hospital last week in which the father donated a kidney. Dr. Gerald Cook, the transplant surgeon, says a kidney from a living donor has a 75 to 90 per cent chance of taking and may survive up to 30 years and longer, while a kidney from a dead person has a 60 per cent chance and may need replacement in 5 to 10 years.
