Original Toronto Star caption: Conservative leader renews pledge to select cabinet composed of Best Brains in Canada. Speaking in Maple Leaf Gardens last night Hon. R. J. Manion; Conservative party leader; declared he was leading the party in accordance with its highest traditions. In a time of emergency; he asserted; I am rising above petty political ambitions. Sir John A. Macdonald did it in 1867 and if he had not done so there would be no Dominion of Canada today. he pledged himself to choose a government composed of the best brains in Canada; and to lead the country in a truly united war effort. No leader who placed party interests above those of country; he declared; could guide Canada properly in time of crisis. He charged Prime Minister King and his ministers with deliberately building up antagonisms in the province of Quebec; while attempting to pose as upholders of national unity.
