Inscribed by the author: ''A man's first book will always occupy a place in his heart that none other can fill. Into this work is interwoven the singing of song-sparrows and robins and the smell of growing things, for it was finished in the prime sweetness of the spring time. Howard Pyle... August 27, 1896''.
