Original Toronto Star caption: Emergency centre in Aurora for Metro mayors and chairman is in this 100-year-old house. North York Controller Robert Yuill (left) talks with caretakers Pat Hunter and Eric Holm. It was obtained in 1962 by Metro at height of Cuban missile crisis. It has a pre-stressed concrete fallout shelter and sophisticated radio rooms.

New home for Hedgehog: Kim Dormaar, assistant director of new Metro zoo, holds a hedgehog from Asia, one of 5,000 animals, birds, reptiles and fish which will live in the 700-acre zoo. In order to raise funds for the new zoo, Metro's six mayors and thousands of zoo supporters are today walking 15 miles in hopes of raising $500,000 towards $6 million zoo fund objective. The zoo, being built in northeastern corner of Scarborough, will open next summer.

New mayor for Uxbridge. The four-way race for the mayor's chair in Uxbridge was won last night by pharmacist Gord Davie, 40, in his first try for political office. Watching the election returns in his living-room he is flanked by campaign workers Bev Fellows (left) and Mary Lettau. Although he didn't campaign specifically on the issue. Davie was regarded by many citizens as an anti-penitentiary candidate. Major issue was proposed to build a $13 million prison reception centre in the township.
