Original Toronto Star caption: Harriston; How they named it; Located 45 miles northwest of Guelph; this town grew up on the banks of the Maitiand River. It was named after Archibald Harrison; the first to settle in the area. He built a sawmill in 1854; laid out the town lots a few years later and with James Stark opened the first hotel in the area. Harrison became the first postmaster.
