Original Toronto Star caption: Cheers and applause; led by Mayor Philip Givens and Metro chairman William Allen; rang out in Nathan Phillips Square today as the new $31 million City Hall made its official debut setting off a week of festivities. More than 5;800 staked out space on green benches fanning the square as rockets carrying flags; sky flashes and exploding shells burst above them. Marching bands played; jets roared overhead and Governor-General George Vanier opened the hall by cutting a 132-foot long lenght of red ribbon - the longest piece of red tape at a city hall that has been bedevilled by red tape since it was first conceived by teh late Finnish architect Viljo Revell; whose widow attended.

Cool cash representing the United Way's $16.2 million goal surrounds campaign chairman William Christener deep in vaults of a Metro Bank. There is is folks . . . that's exactly what we need. Let's go out and get it, Christener said as he kicked off campaign early yesterday for the media. Official appeal kick-off starts tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Nathan Phillips Square and you're invited.
