Original Toronto Star caption: Returning to port after a patrol; Toronto Harbor Police officers Warren Dunlop; 38; and Dave Maskell; 26; get a view of the Toronto skyline. Although the summer is the busiest season for the harbor police; patrols go on all winter long on the windswept reaches of Lake Ontario. In addition; the Harbor Police are responsible for Grenadier and Catfish Ponds in High Park and patrol them on foot or on skates when they're frozen over in the winter.

Harbor police scuba divers plunge into the ice-covered water of the harbor; led by 2nd Officer Ernie Norrey (top). Following him are Brian Kennedy; David Bryan and Ulrich Ertle. In the water; only the tops of their heads show (bottom) as they practise holding their breath to conserve air and keep in shape in case a car plunges into the lake. They practise all year; even in 30-degree weather like today.
