Original Toronto Star caption: Despite his cheery smile; it was a rotten afternoon for animal control officer Gord Haley yesterday. He fell through Lake Ontario ice near Ontario Place while rescuing this 60-pound mutt and lost his wallet to boot. Fellow Humane society officers pulled them to safety. The water temperature was 0C (32F).

Puppy love isn't saddling Metro with as many unwanted pets as it used to, says George Banton, chief animal control officer for the Borough of York. Above, he displays one of the York animal shelter's inmates, a young part-German Shepherd. The animal shelter now has empty cages and Banton gives the credit to the borough's low-cost spay-neuter program, begun two years ago.
