Original Toronto Star caption: St. lawrence market north building at Front and Jarvis across Front from the old main market. It replaces the Farmer's Mar- been in use only on Saturdays after a new food terminal was opened on the the Humber River. The main market was built in 1830 on land donated to the city on condition that it always be used by farmers as a market place. The new market; shown above; cost $500;000. It is only about half as high as the former 50-foot building although it has the same floor space. It does not; however; have the same character; says Harvey Cowan. It looks to much like a modern supermarket and not enough like an old-style; 18th-century market place.
