Original Toronto Star caption: Here's the beef: Basic beef stew looks its best served in this hard-paste porcelain tureen from Bavaria (circa 1765). The tureen is thought to have come into its own in the France of Louis XIV and XV. To be correct; stew should be served in a round tureen; soup in an oval one. Don't tell Miss Manners!
