The shredded remains of automobiles and other scrap metal are heaped on the grounds of Industrial Metal Co. of Canada at the east end of Toronto Harbor; framing the CN Tower and other landmarks. The firm;. Which has been in business since 1945; uses a unique ripping machine; giant shredders and guillotine shears to cut discarded metal products down to size. In the past; undesirable materials in junked cars was stripped off by hand but now a machine rips up 70 cars an hour and separates the metal by magnets. Heavier scrap is cut down by torches.
