Original Toronto Star caption: Mont St. Michel; is hard to overlook as you drive along the Emerald coast of Normandy and Brittany since the land around is flat and it rears up a sudden 500 feet out of the sands of a shallow bay. The huge rock; protected by high tides and quicksand; has been a Christian stronghold since the 8th century; though the abbey which crowns it has been enlarged and changed down the centuries.
