Original Toronto Star caption: The people of Timbuktu aren't all desert Arabs; as can be seen from the faces in this crowd at a local festival. In fact the Tuaregs; as the warrior-traders of the desert are called; are very much in the minority in the city of mud. They much prefer the sands of the Sahara and the free life of the camel caravan. But they founded the city a thousand years ago by leaving slave to guard its life giving well.
