Original Toronto Star caption: Dief takes his stand -- and then 'Goes Deaf'. Opposition Leader John Diefenbaker was a stern and imposing figure as he spoke to the Kingsway Kiwanis Club yesterday when he declared his full support for U.S. policies in Viet Nam. However, last night he ran into heckling before a crowd of 1,500 at Richmond Hill. Among hecklers was high school student Sharon Cowan, hand in air, who asked what his policy was toward U.S. involvement in Viet Nam. He threw off question with comment about selective hearing.
