Original Toronto Star caption: Yea. To Harry Gairey; 82; for the good example he sets present-day Torontonians who are concerned about racism in our schools and on our streets. Gairey; who immigrated to Canada from Jamaica in 1916; and went to work for the railways - one of the few jobs then available to blacks - has worked all these years helping other West Indian immigrants and battling discrimination. Recently; the government of Jamaica gave Gairey its Order of Distinction. We salute him; too.
