Harpur describes the wilderness mountains of Samaria in the background as rounded peaks, time-worn and earth-colored. It is the third day of 100-mile trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Jericho, the world's oldest and lowest city, lies 1,300 feet below sea level.
