My Vi Vuong was born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1953. Her father, Nghia Vuong (1922-1997) was born in Fujian, China and had lived in Vietnam since 1930. Following the Vietnam War (1955-1975), Vuong and her siblings were among the millions who would become known as ‘Vietnamese boat people’ fleeing the country amidst the subsequent wars and conflicts with bordering nations and the impacts of Communist rule on daily life. The family arrived in Canada in August 1979, marking the end of their 14-month journey, and settled in Toronto. From there, they sponsored their parents and sister to join them in 1983 under family reunification.
