Original Toronto Star caption: Silver refinery, near the storied mining town of Cobalt, Ont., is being closed. Stan Lescom, at right, with his wife Theresa in front of the plant, expects to be laid off soon- and msot of the 90 other employees have already lost their jobs. The town is now in bad shape, with at least 25 per cent of its workers unemployed. Cobalt was built in haphazard fashion, with winding, hilly streets (at left), during a mineral rush that began in 1903. one hope is that another company will step in to keep the old silver refinery operating. High silver prices would help.
