Original Toronto Star caption: He was head of TV drama. A National Film Board producer, Sydney Newman was appointed head of CBC-TV drama when the network began. In 1958 he moved on to British television, as a program director, first for independent TV and then in 1962 as head of BBC-TV drama. In 1970 he was appointed special advisor to Canadian Radio-Television Commission chairman Pierre Juneau. The following year Newman was made chairman of the National Film Board.
