Original Toronto Star caption: A bad break for Canadian Olympic skier. Steve Podborski of Don Mills, one of Canada's World Cup downhill skiers, rests in Toronto General Hospital and reads sports section of The Star over the weekend. Podborski, 18, whose right leg is encased in a cast, suffered torn knee ligaments during a practice run in Europe last Sunday and then was flown to Toronto where he underwent an operation. It's a bad break for the skier who was youngest member of Canada's squad in Winter Olympics which opens in Innbruck, Austria tomorrow. 'I'm not too upset, I'm still young yet,' he says

Back home in Timmins with Canada's only first-place gold medal from the Winter Olympics, skier Kathy Kreiner is applauded by her father, Dr. Harold Kreiner (right), and 1,000 other people in the Community Sportsplex. About 200 well-wishers greeted her at the tiny Timmins airport, others lined the seven-mile road into town. Kathy surprised the ski world by winning the women's giant slalom.
