Original Toronto Star caption: Our lady to greet him, Crowds on Avenue Rd. near MacPherson Ave. brought a portable statue of the Madonna to greet the Pope as he rode by popemobile to Nathan Phillips Square. Young and old lined the route, waving papal flags and souvenirs and hoping for a wave or blessing from the Pontiff. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, said Ruth Sullivan, 65, who came directly from her night shift as a nurse at Scarborough Centenary Hospital to join the exuberant crowds. It's a peace mission. I think he's trying to get the young people to get back on the right track.

Warm welcome: Italian President Francesco Cossiga wades into crowds of well-wishes who mobbed him as he strolled along St. Clair Ave. W. yesterday, shaking hands and pinching children's cheeks. People who lines the sidewalks in the wind and drizzling rain waved Italian and Canadian flags and shouted greetings in both languages as they gave him a warm welcome to Metro.
