Original Toronto Star caption: It's tough getting to the top in big-time TV news, but it can be even tougher staying there. NBC's Jessica Savitch knows. And, she said here yesterday, being a woman doesn't help. Savitch holds down the anchor desk for NBC-TV's Saturday night newscast (which isn't seen in Toronto, however) and is big in the weekday news updates. She's made a good name for herself there. And you'd think NBC, being short on recognized stars the last year or two, would play safe with that. But a while back the network asked her to move to the early-morning Today Show and she balked. Getting up at 2 a.m. five days a week would wipe her out for covering big the sun shines.

Behind counter of his flagship Diana Sweets stores, company president George Boukydis ponders the future of his $6 million a year enterprise. Stores stopped selling candy some years ago when firm's key candy maker retired after 45 years of service. An adequate replacement was not found and now, says Boukydis, it's getting tough to find pastry cooks. The supermarkets are stealing what few there are left.

Yea. To Principal John Plumpton of Jane Junior High School in North York for trying to get more students to read books. Twice a week staff and students are given 50 minutes of the day just to read - anything they like. Some of them may discover that reading is a joy, even though it's a little more work than watching a TV scree. It's a nice idea.
