The young liar!! : a tale of truth and caution : for the benefit of the rising generation. An edition was published in 1821 by Dean and Munday under the title: Young Wilfred; or, The punishment of falsehood. At the age of nine Wilfred entered the academy of Dr. Birchall, a stern disciplinarian who considered plays an abomination and who ''would as soon see the scarlet-fever as a play-book in school''.(p. 34) He maintained that ''even Shakespare himself was his aversion, and he often declared, he wished the fellow had never been born''. (p. 24-25). Illustrated with a folding frontispiece and one plate engraved on copper. Wilfred's practice of telling ''guileful fibs'' and ''white lies'', for which he was severely punished, finally led to his ignominious death in a duel.
