Original Toronto Star caption: Some wearing gas masks stolen from Guelph prison storeroom hurled back gushing tear gas missiles at the guards. Ontario provincial police from as far away as Peterboro raced to the prison in answer to the riot call. Warning shots narrowly missed rioting mobs in corridors during the height of the outbreak. Prisoners used crowbars to batter locks, radiators in wave of destruction.
