Researcher at work: Dr. Alan Bernstein, described as best cell biologist in country, works in lab at the new Mount Sinai Research Institute, the first major research centre to be founded in Canada in years. Director is Dr. Louis Siminovitch, former chief of genetics at Hospital for Sick Children.

Progress recorded: Dr. Mark Mandelcorn of Mount Sinal tests eyes of Michel Paquet of Timmins, who was blinded in a mining accident. Mandelcorn, who says he has rarely seen such badly damaged eyes, performed the operations that have given Paquet normal vision in one eye.

Gift of sight: Mornine Poonah, 56, was blind in one eye, and had only 1 per cent vision in the other, before an operation last year by mississauga ophthalmologist Dr. Brian Newbigin. Now she has 25 per cent vision in one eye, which is improving steadily as she becomes accustomed to her glasses.

How it works: Dr. John MacKenzie, who recently retired as co-ordinator of the hand clinic at the Workers' Compensation Board's Downsview Rehabilitation Centre, uses a diagram to explain injuries to workers who are sent to the clinic for treatment. he hopes to continue his research into hand injuries.
