Kidney specialist Dr. Paul Tam vowed to bring a $1 million kidney dialysis unit to Scarborough after Gary Belz died of a heart attack due to kidney failure more than two years ago. Tam said if Belz, then 37, hadn't had to wait a month for dialysis treatment at a downtown hospital, he would still be alive today. W. H. Thornburn, chairman of the Toronto Stock Exchange board of governors, sees a small revival of confidence by Canadian investors, but much less than I had expected by this time. He forecasts continued sluggishness in trading until corporate earnings improve. Thornburn thinks there could be new speculation in oil and gas stocks when results of winter drilling become available. Cost-cutting and other controls have prepared brokers for any new storms, he says.

Veteran Merchandiser Chuck Drury is heading an ambitious expansion in the catalogue showroom business by Shop-Rite, a division of Hudson's Bay Co. Sho-Rite will open 30 sales rooms next month, several in the Toronto area. More units under banners of Woolco, Cardinal and Consumers Distributing will push sales over $200 million.
