Behind the coroner, Dr. A. broken and paint from the charred ceiling. Macdonald, is the rear entrance to the third-floor block, first men in Stratford jail call the area death row, officials said. Researcher at work: Dr. Alan Bernstein, described as best cell biologist in country, works in lab at the new Mount Sinai Research Institute, the first major research centre to be founded in Canada in years. Director is Dr. Louis Siminovitch, former chief of genetics at Hospital for Sick Children.

Panel controlling all locks in Rexdale's new $15 million jail is tested by Supt. W. L. Barber yesterday. Known officially as the Metropolitan Toronto West Detention Centre it will help ease chronic overcrowding at Toronto (Don) Jail - but my almost doubling its capacity. Officials are facing the challenge of housing 340 inmates in a building designed for 200. The cells will contain two prisoners instead of one.

Victor Ling is world- renowned for his work in cancer research. Last year he received both the Dr. Josef Steiner Prize in Europe and the General Motors Kettering Prize - recognized as the top international award for cancer research - at a June dinner in Washington, D.C. Ling helped discover how cancer cells resist the effects of tumor-destroying drugs by using a tiny protein. The protein ejects drugs from the cell before they have time to act. Ling spent years refining and confirming the discovery, which has sparked a search for the right decoy drug capable of fooling the protein and allowing cancer-fighting drugs to slip in for the kill.
