James D. Robinson III, chairman of New York based American Express Co., pictured at the Toronto Stock Exchange where his company's shares were listed for the first time yesterday. The firm is currently facing a challenge to its domination of the travellers' cheque market from Visa and Master Charge, whose credit cards dominate the international bank card scene. Master Charge hopes to be in the business by next May and Visa will make a decision shortly.

Bond thinks today's company managers would do a better job if they were given bonuses for boosting profits. His customer say he knows merchandise well.

Big plans: Bob Collins-Wright, president of Inglis, says his company will invest $60 million over the next five years and hire an additional 1,000 workers. He predicts his expanded firm will capture 35-to-40 per cent of all appliance sales in Canada this year.

Veteran Merchandiser Chuck Drury is heading an ambitious expansion in the catalogue showroom business by Shop-Rite, a division of Hudson's Bay Co. Sho-Rite will open 30 sales rooms next month, several in the Toronto area. More units under banners of Woolco, Cardinal and Consumers Distributing will push sales over $200 million.
