Woodcut of ''The Tree of Abuse'' in the middle part of front cover, showing a tree with branches being labelled ''Legislative Council'', ''57 Rectories'', ''U. Canada Law, Land Office and Casual Revenue'', ''Canada Comp.'', and the roots labelled ''The Colonial Office''. A four-verse poem under the tree, and signed ''Spectator'' reads: ''We Sycophants, Magistrates, Clergy, and Jailors, We Colonels and Captains, Clerks, Courtiers, and Tailors, We Commissioners and Clerks of the Court of Requests, ''In this tree of abuse we have feathered our nests.'''' In the lower part of front cover are two caricature faces, one scowling and one smiling. Cover title and illustration set within frame of Greek key rules with corner rosettes and lozenges. Stitched.
