Sara Crewe, a pupil at Miss Minchin's London school, is left in poverty when her father dies, but is later rescued by a mysterious benefactor. When she discovers a burglar in the house, nine-year-old Editha persuades the thief to not awaken or harm her mother and to take her own possessions instead of those belonging to her father.
