Lot 15, Con. 1 West. Bathurst St. and Sheppard Ave. John Bales house, view south-east. John Bales was an English settler who arrived in 1819, acquiring sixty acres in the south east portion of lot 15, con. 1 west in 1824. The house was built in the same year. In 1887 the house was sold and became part of the York Downs Golf Club (1923-1970), used as housing for the groundskeeper. It stands today in its original location, now Earl Bales park (opened 1975), and is a designated heritage building.
