Original Toronto Star caption: There were few stores in Halifax's main downtown shopping district that were not broken into. The crowd went after drygoods and even jewelry no less than wet goods. Thousands of dollars' worth of plate glass windows littered the sidewalks after protective barricades had been torn down. Later police made a house to house search for looted goods.
