Original Toronto Star caption: Newfoundland; the sentinel of the St. Lawrence; may never experience a Nazi thrust; but under the joint defence plan warring Canadians and non-warring Americans are each endeavoring to make the island as impregnable as they can in case an attack does come. Here are pictured activities of the Canadian units which are on guard duty in Newfoundland; either at anti-aircraft posts; costal batteries or gun emplacements guarding vital points on the bleak coast-line. Above is a Canadian soldier at an anti-aircraft post ? ready for action. He is kneeling behind a hand-operated siren to give warning of raids.
