Original Toronto Star caption: Angela and Gabriele Camaioni gaze in loving wonder at their son Alfonso; born 12 weeks prematurely on May 17 and weighing only 2 pounds; 1/2 ounce. The infant is in the special neonatal intensive care unit of the Hospital for Sick Children which in the past year cared for 300 high-risk premature babies brought from as far north as Thunder Bay. Medical science has increased the infant survival rate to 60 per cent for babies born between 24 and 28 weeks. Normal gestation is about 39 weeks or nine months.
