Original Toronto Star caption: Do-it-yourself service is popular at this gas bar. Canadian Tire Corp. is trying out a split service at its Lawrence Ave. Markham Rd. outlet. The customer has the option of serving himself for 46.9 cents a gallon or being served by an attendant for 51.9 cents a gallon. The split station is less well-known than the conventional self-service bar. Canadian Tire officials wouldn't disclose the proportion of customers who prefer to pump their own gas; but this picture seems to indicate the preference. Only the 51.9 customers get coupons they can spend on merchandise in Canadian Tire stores. There are worth 5 per cent of gas purchase.
