Original Toronto Star caption: Ajax by land was linked to Ajax by sea this week as HMS Ajax; a British frigate; anchored off the Town. With plenty of townspeople and dignitaries climbing aboard and inspecting the ship; the crew was kept busy as goodwill ambassadors. Highlight of the activities; which were launched Wednesday morning; comes tomorrow at 11 a.m. when the ship will receive the freedom of the town of Ajax. The town and the ship are both named after a British cruiser; Ajax; which took part in the Battle of the River Plate in December; 1939; that put an end to the German batteship Graf Spee. Harwood Avenue; the town's main thoroughfare; is named after Commodore Henry Harwood; the senior officer during the action. And Dreyer Drive was named after the gunnery officer of the cruiser; who is now Admiral Sir Desmond Dreyer. He and his wife; Lady Dreyer; who launched the present HMS Ajax; will be special guests at the ceremonies. Torontonians will have a quick glance at the ship Monday when it anchors off Ontario Place between 12 noon and 1 p.m. to take a salute from the HMCS Haida.
