Original Toronto Star caption: They've been laying an oil boom: Fran Dorr (left; foreground) and Tad Clark from Clayton; N.Y.; and other crews have been working since 4 a.m. Wednesday trying to contain hundreds of thousands of gallons of heavy bunker oil that have coated 20 miles of St. Lawrence River and its shoreline. They said the oil in some places is 6 to 8 inches thick. Two wildlife sanctuaries north of spill are being examined. It is feared hundreds of birds will die from the effects.
