Notes
This boy is one of countless family members left behind when Chinese men went overseas to find work in the late-1880s and early-1900s. His father, CHIN Ng, traveled to Canada in 1918, paying the head tax to enter the country and settling in Toronto. Unable to bring his wife and sons to Canada due to the Chinese Exclusion Act, Chin wed and had children with a Jewish woman, Rose Rosenthal. Following repeal of Chinese Exclusion in 1947, CHIN tried to sponsor his two sons in China to Canada under family reunification. By then, the sons had aged beyond the eligible age limit that was set at 18 years old for children, and their immigration sponsorship subsequently denied. Chin had a gambling habit in Canada and died shortly after, leaving two families behind.
