Presentation to R.M.S. "Empress of Ireland"

This handsome timepice of Irish bog oak, with works manufactured in Ireland, was "Presented to R.M.S. Empress of Ireland by Irishment of the cities of Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. A token of esteem and respect to Sir Thomas G. Shaughnessy, President, 1906." The presentation was made on the completion of of the first voyage of the "Empress" across the Atlantic. She was built at Glasgow by the Fairfield Company, and launched in the summer of 1906. In a collision with the Norwegian collier "Storstad," east of Father Point, in the St. Lawrence, she was sunk, with the loss of a thousand lives, May 29th, 1914. The clock went down with the vessel.
