Procès politique; la Reine vs. Jalbert, accusé du meurtre du Lieutenant Weir, du 32e Régiment de Sa Majesté

A record of the trial of François Jalbert (1780-1854) in September 1839 for the murder of Lieut. George Weir during the Rebellion of 1837 in Lower Canada. Jalbert, a militia captain from St. Denis, had been in jail for two years on a charge of having murdered Weir on November 23, 1837 when Weir was a prisoner of the Patriotes. The jury included eight Francophones and four Anglophones, of whom two were of British origin. After several days of waiting, the verdict came down: by a margin of ten to two, the jurors found Jalbert not guilty. Only the two jurors of British origin voted for a conviction.
