Although written in the form of a fairy tale, the story is based on fact. The authors acknowledge their indebtedness to Mackay's Popular delusions; Conolly's On the construction and government of lunatic asylums, and William's narrative of his Christian labours in the South Sea Islands. The description of a great pestilence has been borrowed from Defoe's History of the plague. Footnotes give source authorities.
