Actually originally published on December 20, 1845. Cf. Smith, W.E. Charles Dickens in the original cloth, II, p. 43. Osborne copy: navy blue full calf, edges gilt; gilt border on upper and lower covers; ornate gilt on spine with flower motif, raised bands; maroon endpapers. Original burgundy cloth covers and spine (pictorial gilt upper cover and spine) bound into the leather binding at the end of volume. The frontispiece, pictorial engraved added t.-p., and 12 text illustrations are engraved by Joseph Swain, Edward and George Dalziel, and others, after Daniel Maclise, Richard Doyle, Clarkson Stanfield, John Leech, and Sir Edwin Landseer; Publisher's advertisements (2 unnumbered pages) "New edition of Oliver Twist" and "Mr. Dickens's Works" follow page 174. The third in a series of five "Christmas books" published from 1843 to 1848.
