"The object of this little story, therefore, is to show, that, in the amusements of children, in their studies, and various occupations, all may be done to the glory of God, and may yet be done consistently with the most perfect cheerfulness. ... Many of the conversations here recorded really took place with a child of great intelligence"--Preface, page vi. Illustrated with a hand-coloured copperplate frontispiece engraved by J. & J. Johnstone after C.S. [i.e. Catherine Sinclair]. While Charlie's parents were in a "far-away country" he was left in the care of his two aunts. The choice of the one who was to be his guardian was left to his discretion.
