  • Light brown cloth over heavy bevelled boards, with lettering and design of three large footprints stamped in dark brown on upper cover; spine has title and author lettered in gilt at top of spine and a different publisher "Milford" in dark brown at base of spine; the middle footprint from the upper cover is mainly on the lower spine; endpapers picture "The lost world" supposedly in a photograph; frontispiece "photograph" of Professor Challenger, in colour, facing t.p.; t.p. lettered in black with poem of Doyle's on verso; foreword (p. [iii]); contents (p. [v]-vii); list of illustrations (p. [ix]-x); text begins on p. 11; thirteen illustrations pasted to light brown mounts tipped in, including black and white "photographs" of Professor Challenger, of the pinnacle and tree, and of the first footprint; upper edges of paper grey and smoothly cut; side and lower edges of paper unevenly cut.
