Original Toronto Star caption: Out of intensive care four days after she had open-heart surgery, 14-year-old Barbara Cantwell of Bell Island, Nfld., smiles at her father, Jack, in a ward in the Hospital for Sick Children. Barbara was starting to have heart failure because of a leaking valve, which was replaced in a five-hour operation. While Cantwell waited to see his daughter, he walked the streets of Toronto with little more that streetcar tickets in his pocket. The family lives on welfare.
